Alberta Health Services
Alberta Health Services took over for most ambulance services
province-wide starting on April 1, 2009. Not all local ambulance services did
transition to AHS, although they would have still be dispatched by AHS. In the
Edmonton area a number of local operators remained including Strathcona County,
St. Albert, and Spruce Grove.
This page has been broken down into 3 pages covering Ambulances, as well as
Non-Ambulance Transport, Specialized equipment, and SUV's. SUV's also include
any of the few sedans that have operated at one point or another. SUV's can
include PRU's, Primary Response Units, but not necessarily all SUV's are PRU's,
so we haven't tried to sort them out.
Ambulances have a
Fleet numbering: Ambulances (including private ambulance fleets) have a province wide 4 digit number that is unique to that ambulance. Before AHS, certainly Edmonton ambulances would then also had a City fleet number, and I'm sure that would have been the case for other fleets as well. Under AHS the 4 digit number remained. Therefore: All ambulances are sorted by that 4 digit number in the ambulance section. Everything else is more or less whatever! AHS vehicles received a 5 digit AHS fleet number, so this covers Non-Ambulance Transport, SUV's, and the bus. Ex Edmonton EMS SUV's, and special equipment still seemed to use their City of Edmonton fleet numbers, ditto for the few ex Calgary piece of equipment we have photos of so those are sorted by those fleet numbers.
In April 2024, the UCP Government announced plans to privatize interfacility transfers in Edmonton and Calgary. This would re-introduce private ambulances that kind of went away when AHS took over.
As of April 1, 2025 as part of the breakup of AHS, ambulance
services are being taken over by a new agency, Acute Care Alberta. We'll see
what this means for the ambulance fleet moving forward as it evolves. Assuming
this is a logo change at least, and perhaps a paint scheme change, then we'll
look at creating a new section for this new agency.
You can assume most photos were taken in the Edmonton area, and any that weren't
are noted.
