Edmonton Police Service- Replacing The Crown Victoria
The Ford Crown Victoria was ending production
with the 2012 model year. This had been EPS's standard patrol car for at least
the previous 15 years. It's replacement was the Ford Police Interceptor Sedan,
and the Ford Police Interceptor Utility. The Sedan was based upon the Taurus,
and Utility on the Explorer. Alternatives included the Dodge Charger. In
addition to looking at these 3 options, EPS also looked a 3 hybrids. The Ford
Fusion, Ford Explorer, and Toyota Camry hybrids. The Ford Explorer hybrids
featured the older body style, as opposed to the newer body style of the Ford
Interceptor Utility's.
This page features the Dodge Charger, Ford Police Interceptor Sedan, Ford
Fusion, and Toyota Camry. None of these proved successful, and all are
presumably now retired. Front line use was somewhat limited for the hybrids. The
Interceptor Sedan's saw a number deployed with the STAT team. The Dodge
Charger's featured their own unique version of the EPS blue and red stripe
livery, while all of the rest were in black and white. In the long term, the
Ford Interceptor Sedan was discontinued in 2019 and the Ford Fusion in 2020.
Some of these vehicles, in particular Dodge Charger's might be in the fleet of
unmarked vehicles.
