New Flyer 2007 DE40LF- Series Hybrid with ISE Thundervolt
These 10 buses were part of an purchase in 2005 from New Flyer for 265 buses which consisted of 245 D40LF's, and 20 diesel hybrid DE40LF's. The other 10 hybrids were equipped with Allison parallel hybrid drive trains. At the time, New Flyer wasn't regularly producing diesel series hybrids with any diesel hybrids being Allison parallel systems. This was contrary to competitor Orion, who were primarily producing series hybrids with a BAE drive train. New Flyer did have some exotic options however, including gasoline electric hybrids and fuel cell buses. These buses used a series hybrid drive from ISE, utilizing Siemens traction motors. It was this ISE drive that was offered to New Flyer customers who wanted a diesel series hybrid at the time. Only two agencies ever purchase these diesel series hybrids, CTA's 10 DE40LF's, and ETS's 2 DE40LFR's. With ISE subsequently going bankrupt, supporting ISE powered buses, would prove to be an issue. ETS would have their 2 buses converted to diesels, and CTA would retire their 10 buses by 2014. Needless to say, it was a highlight of the trip to Chicago and Dayton to get to see the other fleet of New Flyer/ ISE buses that existed.
