BC Transit purchased a fleet of 20 hydrogen
fuel cell buses from New Flyer for operation in Whistler, specifically during
the 2010 Winter Olympics. The buses featured the Ballard FCvelocity-HD6 fuel cell,
rated for 150 kW. The buses featured a series hybrid drive train by ISE, which
used a pair of Siemens ELFA 85 kW AC induction motors, and 2 battery packs from
Valence using lithium phosphate batteries rated at 47 kW. The buses have a
supplemental 20 kW heater due to Whistler's winter conditions. The buses
operated for 5 years, being retired in March 2014 at the conclusion of their
intended demonstration period.
