The St. Albert Centre Exchange opened on July 24, 2000.
Located near the heart of St. Albert, it helped to accommodate an expanding St.
Albert Transit by facilitating transfers in a more central location, compared to
the rather southerly location of the existing Transit Centre. Along with the new
exchange was a completely revised local transit network that included the
renumbering of the commuter routes into their own series in the 200's. The
former St. Albert Transit Centre was renamed to the Village Tree Station. St.
Albert Transit used the "Station" name to denote park and ride space available,
while "Exchange" was used to denote a facility only for passengers transferring
between buses with no park and ride space. Park and ride space would eventually
come to the St. Albert Centre Exchange with about 120 stalls in September 2014.
The layout is very unique for the Edmonton region. River Crest Crescent is a
north/ south road that passes through the exchange. Southbound are a number of
stops extending as far south as the McDonald's along the sidewalk. Northbound
there are two lanes, one lane served by an island platform and is the
northbound through road, and then the second lane is a bus only lane with
operator washrooms located next to it.
