Suburban commuter transit systems often find success with park and ride, and St. Albert Transit was no different, however, while always having some park and ride spots available at the St. Albert Transit Centre/ Village Tree Station, this only amounted to about 350 stalls, with another 190 available for $4 per day from a local business. The St. Albert Centre Exchange was built without any park and ride stalls when opened, although in September 2013 about 120 stalls were made available to transit users.
St. Albert had identified a need for a transit centre with a larger park and ride capacity as a priority project as early as 2009. In 2015 the funding came through, and the future transit centre was provisionally known as the Campbell Road Park and Ride Transit Centre. Land was sorted out during 2017, and interestingly, the chosen location is actually within the City of Edmonton City Limits.
St. Albert Transit's Naki Transit Centre opened on August 30, 2020 after construction started in May 2019. The project cost was $30 million with $20 million coming from Provincial Green Trip funding, and the remaining $10 million from the Provincial MSI grant. The transit centre features 16 bus bays and is expandable to 24 bays. It was built with 500 paved parking stalls, and an additional 300 in a gravel parking lot. The entire site is expandable to 1600 parking stalls. The transit centre is positioned to be the terminus station for Edmonton's Metro LRT Line, and allow the Metro Line to be extended into St. Albert.
Interestingly, ETS has 2 services that can be seen at this transit centre. ETS On Demand has Naki as a drop off option from a a local church, and ETS uses Naki for park and ride for football games, Heritage Days, concerts, and other special events with park and ride.
"Naki" is Cree for stop/ stop here.
