LRT Signals and Power

Edmonton Power was originally a City of Edmonton owned utility which helped build and maintain the traction power system for the LRT, including the substations, positive and negative feeders and the catenary itself. In 1996 Edmonton Power became EPCOR with the City of Edmonton being it's sole shareholder. While I'm not sure when Signals fell under Edmonton Power/ EPCOR, certainly since the 2000's Signals has fallen under EPCOR as well. Previously, EPCOR also maintained the traction power system for the trolleybus network. Given that EPCOR is a corporation separate from the City, they did bid and advertise the services to other entities. As a result, EPCOR has done work on Calgary's C-Train with this same equipment, and helped finish erecting catenary for TransEd's Valley Line Southeast. EPCOR built the traction power systems for the South Campus, Century Park and NLRT extensions. Ironically, it was Calgary's equivalent of EPCOR, Enmax, who did that work on the Health Sciences extension.
On January 1, 2023 EPCOR, the City of Edmonton ceased having EPCOR provide regular LRT catenary and signaling maintenance services, transferring the equipment and employees to the City of Edmonton. Consequently, the Blatchford Extension was wired up by Western Pacific Enterprises who did the majority of the Valley Line Southeast. WPE has occasionally been seen around the rest of the LRT.
Through the 2010's, EPCOR had as many as 3 line trucks, a wire spool truck, access to ETS's platform line truck (originally an Edmonton Power truck) and a number of different vans and trucks dedicated to the signal system. EPCOR has leased equipment on occasion to support LRT extension construction and upgrades to the existing system as needed.

K3134 2008 Ford F-750 ex K8409- K8409 was initially leased from Nesco by EPCOR to help with erecting the catenary for the SLRT extensions from Health Sciences Station. While other leased units K8408 and K8410 were returned, EPCOR purchased K8409 and after that renumbered from the leased vehicle number range it the regular series as K3134. The truck is equipped with hi-rail wheels, flatbed and a crane. While initially used to hold spools of wire and cable, and perhaps installing poles on the SLRT, it was also used to help with the NE Electrification Upgrades and the NLRT extensions catenary. Since then, K3134 has been used on a range of EPCOR projects. I have not spotted this truck in the City of Edmonton livery after the City brought signal and power back in house.
