South Campus Transit Centre opened on April 26, 2009 as the terminus of this extension of the SLRT extension project. The transit centre features the usual centre island design, with a generous width, likely given it's location an a largely undeveloped area. While there are Provincial and University buildings near by, there is also a lot of empty space. Consequently, this transit centre sees a lot of use from transit passengers transferring from buses to the LRT. A lot of these buses are converging on South Campus from Southwest Edmonton and West Edmonton, including a number of expresses. The most recent addition is the route 31, a Super Express from Leger to University which will utilize the Terwilligar bus lanes, and is planned to be a future BRT route.
The transit centre was only the terminus for the LRT from April 26, 2009 - April 24, 2010, however for this 1 year period it was indeed a particularly busy place at peak times. In particular, the Mill Woods routes: 6, 73, and 74 as well as the 44, would only be spending 1 year here, before being further cutback to Southgate when the next extension opened.
With the reduction in routes after the opening of the next SLRT extension, this transit centre ended up with a number of extra bays.
ETS designated 2 bays for dropping off, the ones closest to the North entrance to the LRT. ETS also tested assigning bay letters to this transit centre, before rolling out this feature to all transit centres with the BNR.
This transit centre formerly hosted the Spruce Grove 561. Unfortunately, this route didn't pan out as intended, eventually being reduced from 40' buses to 30' buses, then cut back to West Edmonton Mall, before being cancelled entirely and replaced by additional trips on the 560. The 561 was where Spruce Grove's XD40's were initially deployed.
The name was changed to include "Fort Edmonton" in September 2012.
With the revision to the transit network, and introduction of On Demand service with the BNR, South Campus found itself as one of the largest, if not largest On Demand hub. It serves On Demand zones North and South of the river as well as to Fort Edmonton Park.
