The Kingsway Transit Centre has had a few variations over the
years, with the current version that is tied into the LRT station detailed on a
separate page.
The previous versions, detailed on this page, were located in the parking lot of
Kingsway Mall (formerly Kingsway Garden Mall).
The first incarnation was at the south end of the mall and was aligned east/
west just north of 112 Ave and was opened sometime around 1978. As this point we only have aerial images showing the
terminal.
The second incarnation was built around 1987/88 when the mall was extend further
south. The terminal was relocated to be aligned north/ south next to 106 St, just
north of 111 Ave. Both of these versions featured basic concrete bus bays and
shelters.
This third incarnation saw the second location updated with a new shelter
building. Like other transit centres built since 2000, the upgrades to Kingsway
included a clock. Unlike all other terminals that received clock towers, the
clock was located in a much shorter structure.
On June 29, 2014 ETS opened the Kingsway/ Royal Alex Transit Centre located SE
of the former Kingsway Transit Centre, across 111 Ave, over a year ahead of the
NLRT extension opening. At that time, the Kingsway Transit Centre would be
demolished and simply converted into parking for Kingsway Mall.
Pre-Horizon 2000 trolleybus routes 9, 41, and 42 served Kingsway. Post Horizon 2000 the route 9 short turn NAIT - Downtown and 2 morning peak trippers served Kingsway.
