Kaskitayo is located in south Edmonton, at the Northwest
corner of the intersection of 23 Ave and 109 St, to the Southeast of the
Heritage Mall shopping centre. The transit centre first appeared in the
1982/1983 Ride Guide, indicating it likely opened in the Fall of 1982. It
featured a centre passenger platform with bus shelters and washrooms for the
operators. Bus entrances and exits were from 109 St and 23 Ave. There was a
gravel Park'N Ride lot located on the North side of the transit centre. While I
don't believe they were original, the shelters in use at the end were unique.
While basically being a regular aluminum shelter, were arranged as 3 shelters
grouped together. They were painted brown and had a dome roof. The only other
location we are aware of with this style of shelter was at the University
Transit Centre.
The Heritage Mall wasn't doing too well after one of it's anchor tenants,
Wal-Mart, vacated and moved to South Edmonton Common. Safeway was interested in
building a standalone store where the Kaskitayo Transit Centre was located. A
landswap was completed which allowed ETS to build a new transit centre on the
West side of the mall along 111 St. This aligned with plans to get the LRT
moving South from the University to a new terminus at Heritage Mall. In the
meantime with Safeway now relocated, Heritage Mall would be torn down and turned
into the Century Park residential development. As far as I recall, Heritage
Transit Centre opened at the same time as the Mill Woods Transit Centre, which
would mean Kaskitayo's closure was September 2, 2000.
One interesting legacy of Kaskitayo that lasted until the end
of the GM New Look era, and for the actual route until 2010, was the Super
Express route 151, later the 47 under Horizon 2000.
To advertise this route, Edmonton Transit painted #754 in a race car paint
scheme, with the number 151 on the car being the route number for this new
route. This bus lasted in this livery until it was retired.
