Stadium Station is the first surface station once the LRT
comes to the surface at 95 St. Located south of 112 Ave, Stadium Station
received it's name from the Commonwealth Stadium, located across the Park and
Ride lot from Stadium Station. Commonwealth Stadium was built for the 1978
Commonwealth Games, and then has served as the home of the Edmonton Football
Team, and has been the site of all manner of sporting events, including at the
international level, as well as hosting many other events such as concerts.
With the station initially featuring CN trackage on either
side an, underground concourse to access the platform was used. This concourse
also serves as a link between the two sides of the transit centre, as well as
communities on either side.
The Stadium Transit Centre is among the smallest. The east
side just amounts to bus stops served by the route 2 and 120 in the westbound
direction, and route 2 in the eastbound direction. From when it opened in 1978
to 2009 the east side of the station was served by trolleybuses. Up until June
1997 they would have been Route 1 Highlands/ Jasper Place buses, and after June
1997 120 Stadium/ Jasper Place buses.
Additionally, the east side has had a Stadium/ Northlands South Entrance shuttle
for K-Days and horse racing. However, with Northlands no longer hosting horse
racing, and redevelopment of the Northlands site planned, future operation of
these shuttles will be limited to a few years at best of K-Days.
The west side features 6 bus bays, however, the route 125 is the only route that
regularly uses this side at present. Previously, this was the route 127. Before
June 1997 this was route 11. It is common to find standby buses waiting in one
of the unused bays, waiting to be dispatched as needed. This side of the
terminal features a Park and Ride lot. The majority of the time the lot is used
for transit customers driving to the station and then taking the LRT, however,
for events at Commonwealth Stadium this lot is used staging bus operating to
other Park And Ride lots throughout the city.
With the ETS Network Redesign taking effect on April 25, 2021 the station on the
west side will be served by the Route 2 Stadium/ West Edmonton Mall and the 101
Stadium/ Abbottsfield, and on the west side by the Route 3 Stadium/ Westmount.
Stadium Station was originally painted yellow, later, being
repainted to the pink colour familiar to riders today. The station originally
featured a partially covered platform, with the outer ends uncovered.
Staircases, an escalator, and elevator were centrally located in the covered
portion.
In 2013, due to deterioration of the platform, a significant platform
replacement project was undertaken. This project entailed building wood
extensions to the platforms to allow continued 5 car train operation while the
opposite end of the platform was replaced with precast platform segments.
During 2018-2019 with redevelopment efforts occurring south
of Stadium on the former Muttart lands, a new surface access to Stadium Station
was built from the south end of the station towards 84 St. at the same a new
road and pedestrian crossing was built further south connecting 84 St and
Stadium Road, and a multiuse path completed along the east side of the tracks
from 112 Ave to 92 St.
At the same time, as part of these same redevelopment and TOD efforts, a
complete rebuilding was being planned of Stadium Station which will see it lose
the concourse level, with that being replaced by surface, at grade entrances at
either end of the station, as well as a new platform so that each track has a
platform, and theoretically, the southbound track could use either platform.
Construction commenced in 2020 with a planned completion date in 2022. By the
fall of 2020 almost nothing remained of the original canopy of the station.
