After LRT construction stagnated through the 1990's, City
Council approved the SLRT extension to the then Heritage Mall on January 18,
2000. Following that, Council approved the construction of Phase 1A from the
University Station to Health Sciences Station at a cost of $100.1 million.
Construction started on February 3, 2003 with testing and commissioning
occurring in late 2005. In the early morning hours on January 1, 2006 the first
revenue train operated to Health Sciences Station, the first LRT extension since
University opened nearly 14 years earlier. On January 3, 2006 an "official"
opening was held for the media and anyone else that didn't feel like staying up
all night for the first train!
Since it's opening Health Sciences has seen a lot of changes to the station and
surrounding land.
The station would only see use as terminus station for the Capital Line for a
little over 3 years before the next extension to South Campus. During these 3
years, LRT frequency was limited to 6 minutes on account of this extension not
having any crossovers, and consequently, the South Portal crossovers were still
used for turning back trains.
In early 2009 the station was renamed to Health Sciences/ Jubilee.
In 2010 the original 4 car platform was extended to 5 cars as part of a $75
million project to increase all SLRT extension platforms to allow 5 car trains.
2010/11 saw the closing of 83 Ave across the tracks, leaving just the pedestrian
crossing, and later complete removal of the roadway.
To the Northwest, the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy building was under
construction in 2008, and to the Southwest the Edmonton Clinic was under
construction by 2009. These two buildings would be connected by a pedway to the
Health Sciences/ Jubilee Station and University Hospital. The pedway connection
to the station was underway by the Spring of 2012.
For the NLRT extension to NAIT, a tail track was constructed South of the HSS.
While Health Sciences/ Jubilee would be the the usual terminus of the Metro Line
eventually, with the signaling issues ETS initially operated Metro Line trains
to Century Park, only using Health Sciences/ Jubilee as the Metro Line terminus
for late night and Sunday service. With signaling issues resolved, Health
Sciences/ Jubilee became the full time terminus for the Metro Line on August 29,
2021.
The platform extensions to 5 cars completed during 2009 and 2010 at Health
Sciences/ Jubilee, McKernan/ Belgravia, and South Campus/ Fort Edmonton
apparently had problems, and all have had remedial work completed on them since.
In the case of Health Sciences/ Jubilee, this work was done during the Summer of
2019.
