2008 Siemens SD-160 #1038 Delivered and Unloaded May 8-9, 2008
ETS #1038 was delivered to Cromdale by CN
on the evening of May 8, 2008, and was unloaded May 9, 2008.
By pure luck, I arrived at Coliseum Station on a route 5 just as #1038 was
arriving with 3 other photographers, 2 of them out of town visitors. Naturally,
the next morning I was up bright and early and headed to Cromdale. Things were
going smoothly as 1038 was moved onto ETS track. I was joined by two friends and
we watched the unwrapping and setup of the jacks. Then, the waiting began... One
of the jacks was having issues. Eventually, around lunch time with one friend
needing to go to work, we decided to head out on the LRT. Riding back and forth
we shot #1038 from the LRT, before heading south to check out SLRT work. About 3
hours later we returned to find not much had changed. What had changed, was the
sunlight was now great for some shots from the south end of the car!
The work crews had had no luck with the malfunctioning jack, so they decided to
lower the car on 3 jacks. With everything in place, #1038 was lifted up clear of
the flatcar. #2010 pulled the flatcar out from under #1038, and then #1038 was
lowered to ETS rails with no further difficulty.
After shooting that my friend decided he needed to get out of the sun.
I was joined by another friend a short while later and #1013 arrived to tow
#1038 to D.L. McDonald. Another friend and the two out of town visitors showed
up around this time.
A few problems were encountered getting the cars to couple together, but
eventually they were. Having decided on a place to shoot, we head back to our
planned spot. With the scanner going, we waited to hear #1013 being given clearance
to head for Clareview. Finally, with 1038 in tow, #1013 departed E track for
Clareview.
Shooting the pair as they headed north, we hustled over to Coliseum to catch the
next northbound, meeting up with another friend on this train.
Arriving at Clareview, we had a few minutes to look over #1038 before it was
pushed from Clareview to DLM by #1013.
While having dinner, I realized I had developed a rather nice suntan after
spending all of the hours at Cromdale... all for photos of the first new LRV on
ETS rails in 20 years, and the first new car delivered to ETS in 25 years!
Special thanks to all the ETS employees that tolerated having us loitering around all day!
As one final note... all of the photos on this page right now were shot on Kodachrome 64 slide film. The scanner I used didn't do the best job.
