EDMONTON TRANSIT SYSTEM
2006 New Flyer DE40LFR
#s 6003-6004 (after diesel conversion)
Due to numerous reliability issues, ETS ISE DE40LFR's #6003 and 6004 were returned to New Flyer in Winnipeg for conversion to standard diesel. The buses were MIA for almost two years before finally returning to service in April 2011. They now feature Cummins ISL-9 (EPA 2010 compliant) diesel engines and Allison B400R5 transmissions. This new diesel standard includes a urea system which occupies the space at the rear of the bus where the HVAC is normally installed, so they retained some roof equipment after conversion. The original HVAC systems with A/C were swapped out to non-A/C units similar to those found on ETS' D60LF's. The buses retained the blue front (as opposed to the black found on all of the other D40LFR's) "hybrid" paint scheme, however gained non-contoured rear panels similar to the 2012 units. Various remnants of the original roof equipment can be viewed from above. This process sure made for a couple of unique buses! As of November 2023, both of these units are in active service running out of Centennial Garage. They now feature Smartbus GPS & stop announcement systems, interior and exterior cameras, and operator's compartment shields & A/C units.
