EDMONTON TRANSIT SYSTEM
LRT 2000 Series Equipment

This page is set up to document ETS's fleet of motive power and freight cars. Originally, this would have just been the 2000 series equipment, but, I've expanded this to include the speeder (figuring that the cars meant for it are in the 2000 series), the Balco mine locomotives, the Kal Trac and the Lo-Railer as generally speaking, they have coupling systems and are meant to haul other equipment.

3855 is also included as I've seen both 2010 and 3850 pulling this car, and it certainly is used as a freight car as it's hauled all sorts of equipment. I'm leaving the stuff like the tool car, and scissor lift car, grinding car, and some of the newer Geismar cars where they are on the 3000 series page. While they are cars that could be coupled into a train, they have a specific purpose and don't really haul materials.

Some of this is still a work in progress so not all details are finished at this point.

Thumbnail Unit # Date Description
2001 1912 GE/ Alco 50 Ton Steeple Cab Locomotive, ex BC Hydro, nee Oregon Electric- 2001 was purchased used by Edmonton Transit from BC Hydro for use as a work locomotive on the LRT extensions under Jasper Ave. In this roll it has been used to haul spoil out during construction, and supplies in, including the tunnel boring machine. The locomotive was also used for construction work on the University Extension, and other maintenance purposes around the LRT system. The locomotive was retired and donated to the Edmonton Radial Railway Society. Subsequently, the ERRS donated the locomotive to the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway where it is on display. It's my understanding that a group is Oregon is looking to bring this locomotive back to it's original home.

2010 1949 GE 45 Diesel Locomotive, ex...... 2010 was purchased used by ETS to replace 1912 GE/ Alco #2001 used in heavy work service on the LRT line. The locomotive has seen a variety of uses including hauling clearance test trains (towing U-2's with clearance gauges attached), ballast trains, and hauling dead trains.

2011- 2011 Geismar Catenary Inspection Vehicle- This versatile, and high tech, vehicle is used to inspect and maintain the LRT networks catenary. It is diesel powered and the pantograph is used to measure the catenary. Perhaps it should be known as a "Catenary Maintenance Vehicle"! In addition to the contact wire measuring equipment, this unit is equipped with a platform life and crane. AAR couplers are fitted on both ends as well as coupling for other equipment carts. This unit has been used for wire replacement with wire spool car #3863.

3670 1976 Fairmont Speeder- purchased initially to help in the construction of the LRT line. This speeder is most often used to haul smaller amounts of materials and tools around the LRT system, used in conjunction with the 2110-2113 series of cars.

3850 Canron Rail Group Kal-Trac Switcher. This is one of original members of the LRT equipment fleet and was used during the initial construction of the LRT. What hasn't this thing done? Off the top of my head that I've seen: catenary maintenance, moving freight cars, moving LRV's, hauling escalator parts in and out of Churchill, tunnel washing trains. In addition, Edmonton's Electric Transit notes it can be equipped with a snow blower, sweeper broom, or snow plough, and the dump box can be used to spread ballast (pg. 191). 3850 has retained it's yellow livery for it's entire career. It is powered by a Detroit Diesel 453 diesel engine, and Allison transmission. As of the last time I saw 3850, it has been running without it's dump box, which, I think was removed to help remove the escalator parts from Churchill.

3850 August 29, 2012 #3850 taking a SP flat car back to 66 St for CN to pickup after unloading a SD160. Note the "coupler" in use with the flat car, and the lack of air connection. The grey piece would be capable of having an attachment to couple to LRV's.
3850 August 29, 2012 Having seen 3850 return to DLM via 129 Ave before, I went and set for a shot of the thing crossing the LRT. It looks even stranger on road!

1980 Balco Battery Mine Locomotives- These two oddballs are listed in the CTG as numbers 1 and 2 (which to me doesn't make a lot of sense), and are listed under type as "Tugger". They are devoid of any markings to indicate fleet numbers. I've only ever found limited information about Balco on the internet. I call these mine locomotives as that appears to be their general style. I would hazard a guess that this pair were used during construction on the Corona extension in particular, but possibly others. Most mine locomotives are narrow gauge and these are standard gauge, so I suspect they were built new for Edmonton Transit. Their use today? I'm not sure! I can't see one of these things rocketing along the mainline when something like the speeder is available, or even 3264 below. However, the one in the June 12th pic appears to have been rebuilt and has some massive batteries. It could be they are just used as an emissions free vehicle to move stuff around the shops, and one is probably a parts source. The one in that is stored indoors is fitted with a primitive knuckle coupler one on end, and the other end has a device that looks like the same devise used to attach a Scharfenberg coupler to 2010 and 3850 to move LRV's around.

2101 Flat Car- I'll dig up a bit more history on this car latter. The car was rebuilt in the late 90's, early 2000's and in 2011, 3874 was added to it. 3874 is removable and I have seen 2101 without it since then.

#2401 Spot Ballast Car- Rebuilt from a flat car (CTG says 2103, I'm curious if it could be 2201), this car is used throughout the LRT to distribute ballast as needed. This might be the last piece of equipment to display the "Flying E" logo (although there are a multitude of other instances of the "Flying E" in and around ETS as of this writing in 2016).

3855 1986 National Steel Car "Lo-Railer". This very versatile car joined the LRT fleet in 1986. It is often paired with 3850 and has often been configured for catenary maintenance, carrying an aerial lift and homebuilt pantograph rig. One end of the car has flip out ramps for loading equipment and has been used to transport equipment into the tunnels, in particular, all of the equipment for the construction of the Churchill junction, as well as parts in and out for the Churchill escalator replacement. I don't believe this car has a knuckle coupler. The car is not level with LRT platforms so cannot be used to delivering equipment to station platforms.
